Visual Aid's and how they work

Visual Aid's for children with Autism and how they work

Many children with autism have problems with communication and it's a big concern for parents. Visaul aid's can help with this. Using visual squences, boards and cards, we can make it a whole lot easier to communicate with our child.

When they go into the kitchen and want something out of the fridge they can put their visual card on the I want board .

It's hard for a child with autism to go from one task to another without getting confused. Giving your child options and getting them to choose an activity can help. If it is lunch time get them to chose an activity and then put the lunch card up so they know that lunch is next .

Most of us worry about our child and their safety, so when they're hurt or can't explain what's wrong it is difficult. It is useful to have a body chart so they can show you where they are hurt or feelings cards to tell you if they feel sick.

If your child has a problem with running away from you you can use safety cards like stop, don't open the door or no running. You can also use them when you're out and about on your daily routine .

Having a visual aid keyring can help when going to appointments, shopping and showing your child what's going to happen next. It can make your routine a lot easier to accomplish and will be easier for your child to understand .
